The Building

The main objectives of the planning of KC International Vocational Centre was to provide an imaginative and conducive learning enviroment for the international inhabitants. Intergrating the centre with landscape, enviroment, community, and their culture were the main strategies in achieving this objectives.

The planning centred on providing an imaginative and conducive learning environment for the international inhabitants while integrating it with the landscape and nearby community. The centre also aims to be at the forefront at realizing “green” or “sustainable” agenda insofar as architectural design is concerned. The “green” or “sustainable” planning encompasses, among others, respecting the natural topography and minimizes disruption to the earth, while the structure itself employs technology and materials that are “friendly” to the environment. Harnessing naturally available energy from the sun, recycling of used water are some of the strategies that could be adopted for the centre to make it self-sustaining, “green” and economical to run in the future.

In principal, the planning is clustered according to the usage. The clusters are as follows:

a) Soft vocational training which comprise workshops and classrooms for hairdressing, beauty therapy, food preparation, IT, business skill, etc.

b) Hard vocational training which comprise workshops and classrooms for motor vehicle, construction, plumbing, plastering, tiling, electrical, etc.

c) Administration and central facilities

d) Boys hostel

e) Girls hostel

f) Sporting and recreational facilities

Each cluster is identified by their own unique style of architecture; form, texture, grain and colour to reflect the diversity and multi-culturalism of trainees inhabiting the centre. Design inspirations are drawn from the unique and diverse cultures of South East Asia.

The campus-like planning allows integration between man-made structure with natural environment such as the lake and river to the north.

The buildings took a low-rise approach – between two to three storeys, to respect nature and integrate with existing township.
